Food Waste

Recycling Requirement

Any business with 10 or more employees must arrange separate food waste collections by a licensed waste carrier by 31 March 2025.

Food waste includes items such as:

  • All uneaten food and plate scrapings

  • Baked goods such as bread, cakes and pastries

  • Rice, pasta, beans

  • Dairy products, eggs and eggshells

  • Raw and cooked fruit and vegetables, peelings

  • Out-of-date or mouldy food

  • Raw and cooked meat or fish, including bones

  • Loose tea leaves, tea bags and coffee grounds

All businesses, with the exception of those with fewer than ten employees, must recycle specific materials.

These materials include:

  • Steel cans

  • Paper and cardboard

  • Aerosols

  • Glass bottles and jars

  • Aluminium cans

  • Cartons

  • Metal tins

  • Plastic bottles, pots, tubs, and trays

These measures are part of the UK Government’s commitment to promoting sustainability and reducing the environmental impact of businesses. Businesses with fewer than 10 full-time equivalent employees will be temporarily exempt from this requirement.

They have until 31 March 2027 to arrange for recycling of food waste.
